The Mandalorian is great.
It’s one of my favorite new shows.
And, the show shows up in every corner of the Internet, but not for the reason you would have thought a month ago.
The mysterious Mandalorian has a and old west wanderer vibe and half the episodes look as though Sergio Leone directed a space opera.
He’s awesome. He looks like Iron Man and he wanders from planet to planet looking for work.
But he’s hasn’t caught the Internet’s heart.
It’s his pint size companion fans lovingly refer to as “Baby Yoda.”
Even though he’s fifty years old he appears as a toddler. His mysterious origins are half the appeal of the show.
He also looked like he’d be fun to draw. He looks like a Funko pop version of Yoda.
So let’s go through it.
First comes the layout. I find it easiest to break the image down into geometric shapes.
Baby Yoda is really just a couple boxes and some triangles for ears. Plus this keeps everything in perspective so that later on nothing looks wonky because you rand out of room on the paper.
Next it’s time to add the details. I refined the hand shape a little and added the cup as well as the beginning of the face. Getting the eyes in the right the spot is the most important part of any drawing with a face.
A little better picture above.
Now it’s time to start adding some of the shadows. Also the color of the paper changed. I was using toned paper and this is the true color. But the other pictures didn’t show up so i had to edit them.
Now it’s time to go through and had some shading to give the drawing some depth and to start making it feel like a completed drawing. The cloak was kind of a mid tone so I spent some time filling it in.
The little cloak was kind of tricky. Wrinkles are always hard to do. I added some hatching to the left side because it’s a larger shaded area and would take forever to fill it in. Plus I wanted the drawing to keep it’s sketchy quality.
The final step is to add some highlights a white pencil. This is always my favorite part of an any drawing. I draw on the toned paper purely for this reason.
There are still some finishing touches left and this what about 90% looks like.
